*** Wood Storks mucking about in the backyard. Wood Storks are the only Storks breeding in North America and are on the endangered species list. They are a large bird, standing around 4 feet tall and with a 5-foot wingspan The Wood Stork used to thrive in south Florida because it is a specialized species that prefers tropical and subtropical habitats with distinct wet and dry seasons. A stork locates food -- mostly small, freshwater fish -- not by sight but by tactolocation, or groping with its bill in shallow water. Often the water is muddy and full of plants, conditions that obscure prey from sight. The stork sweeps its submerged bill from side to side as it walks slowly forward. Its bill snaps shut with a 25-millisecond reflex action -- the fastest known for vertebrates -- whenever it touches prey. Each breeding pair of these large birds requires about 440 pounds (200 kg) of fish per breeding season. Breeding season is as early as October, during the dry season.

Wood Storks are large water birds that are about 3 feet tall. Their wings open up 5 ½ feet wide. They are mostly white, but have a black tail and many black feathers under their wings. Storks are related to ibises, herons, and flamingoes. They have no feathers on their head and neck, so their black skin is easy to see from far away. This makes wood storks the only tall water birds with black, bald heads. Since they have no muscles attached to their voice box, they are very quiet birds. Every now and then they will croak like a bullfrog, or hiss like a snake. Wood storks have long, skinny legs and a long, curved beak. Storks can glide for a long time on warm wind currents. Sometimes they dive and flip as they soar down from high in the sky. When they do flap their wings, they look a bit clumsy. Sometimes they fly in flocks with egrets and ibises. -pelotes.jea.com

christinereinhart : I've never seen wood storks at Ames Park. Nice shot.
fltall : @ijulesdotcom Some of my favorites too.
fltall : @christinereinhart Neither had I. Was shooting the sunrise when this pair came in for a landing. It was funny because they got there before sunrise, and my kodak is crap in low light...had to cross my fingers as other people were getting close for phone shots, that they wouldn't fly off.
fltall : @mrsmlarsson Thanks!
hoshizora01 : These guys are so cool!!

*** Wood Stork coming in for a landing. They always look so gangly and awkward, but they're big, awesome birds with exquisite control. Their thick beak and flight posture always reminds me of the Concorde. Plus, they have pink feet! What's not to like?

martyanthony : Here is a bit of info about the Wood Storks @litascreations @jaynejellybelly @indilenka (so glad you all enjoyed the vid clip): Wood Storks are the only Storks breeding in North America and are on the endangered species list. They are a large bird, standing around 4 feet tall and with a 5-foot wingspan The Wood Stork used to thrive in south Florida because it is a specialized species that prefers tropical and subtropical habitats with distinct wet and dry seasons. Each breeding pair of these large birds requires about 440 pounds (200 kg) of fish per breeding season. Breeding season is as early as October, during the dry season. I often see a few that work the canal behind my house - they're awesome birds.
martyanthony : @jvalori1 - it's hard to imagine that they're endangered, isn't it. This video only shows about half of the ones in this flock. I often see a few right in my backyard. VERY cool birds!
laureebell_ud : Cool birds! Was just in Sebastian inlet! So many there! Will be posting soon! Great video!! 👏👏
