yegstreetart : @fisheyefoto graffiti is anti-social in nature. It's meant to be disruptive and this may be the point an artist is trying to make. For all we know @cheslea's comment is a "mission accomplished" for that writer. People who write on walls are colloquially challenged we don't turn to friendly forms of communication. It's dope you found an outlet in journalism but many others are just not as eloquent. However they are creative, determined and they have goals.
yegstreetart : @fisheyefoto taking this into a larger forum is akin to feeding us to the wolves. I can't defend a group of individuals who don't want defence. The "street art" or "graffiti issue" isn't an actual issue to writers and artists we make the stuff. Others however find fault. Most of these guys are busy thinking about that line that didn't look right on that last tag. Immediately after you finish the last tag you are trying to get better, bigger, faster. It's all consuming and a thousand of us could try and defend this in an open venue but the art will stay the same. This is Edmonton history right now. Peeps like brute, crowb, moze... etc. are coming up here like no one has - it's inspirational IMHO. We probably haven't seen anything yet. This city is gonna get bombed out this summer and there'll be a lot more to complain about fortunately/unfortunately.
yegstreetart : @fisheyefoto btw none of us do illegal work. We paint murals and work on the freewall (can't believe there is only one) but we are all in our 30's. We got the tagging out of our system well over a decade ago. Some never do though.

The way I'm reporting on street art is to take it as a given and comment on it as work, to normalise it as a discussible form. Do you think that's declawing its impact, just curious?
yegstreetart : @fisheyefoto from a standpoint of the viewer that's the best way to take it. However can you say that people just naturally have a vast understanding of something like "abstract expressionism"? which to most art historians is a precursor to modern graffiti. Or did they need some time to learn about. I would say the latter is evidently true. There is a great video called "hands" from Apexer in which he explains the necessity of the tag. It's just part of the process. Everyone starts out as a "toy" only some of us can grow to actually piece. The OG's own the styles from before so we are trying to make up new stuff everyday which is kind of impossible really. These are just some of the reasons we see what we see. Also in a city like this you have to give props for numbers - it may be invasive but it is not easy to do.

There are no rules about art, really, and these tags and writing all qualify as art, which opens them up to reaction, discussion, reduction and affection. My initial moan was about ubiquity and sameness, but those pieces set you to shoot, me to bitch and opened up this discussion. Maybe it's not fair to call them (merely) art, but there can't be any rules on how people react to work without a hypocritical sort of authority coming in, especially in such an uncurated form of expression. You've opened my eyes to the context a little more, and I'll do my best to spread the word. The city could use is more free walls, and it's being fought for by the EAC, for example, but if your predictions about the summer exploding are correct, hopefully the work will inspire more defenders.
