He was in sight of the Twins. Miles out, yes, but he could see them now, like two twisted black fingers of charred wood in a cool pit of ash. The map he held in his left hand, hastily drawn by the trader that gave it to him days prior, had not been false. Perhaps his luck was about to change. Maybe he'd make it in time. Before the storms. Before the winds. Before the cutting glass and razor ice. With his destination now in sight, and a stretch of weathered path before him, he assuredly folded the parchment into his front pocket. He began to reach for the canteen clasped to his waist but thought better of it. In jubilation hasty decisions were made. He could see where he was going, but not what would meet him in between then and now. Perhaps nothing. Perhaps some wanderers. Stragglers. More traders with maps and water and tall tales to bargain with. Or maybe something worse. Something darker. Something not alive. A terror without a heart. A monster without a soul.

The dawn came, and the evening set. Ten passes now had become eleven. Twelve. Thirteen. Fourteen. And on the next pass, as an orange glow began to envelop behind the ominously ever-present clouds, they emerged from their shelter. From wind and acid rain they had been hidden, but from security sweeps that would not for much longer. Six they were, from twenty-seven before- much smaller and faster a party by leg and foot- but with heavy hearts and souls to counterbalance their small gains. They did not have a leader. One man did not call the shots. One woman did not take command. They moved as one, keeping low and quiet as they slipped into the stale morning air. Like a slithering snake through tall grass- meandering to break up their line- cutting and crossing- ducking and dipping- with one eye before them, and one eye on the sky.

However, the risk was too great. The price too high. With twenty-seven they had set out in search of the Shattered Yards, and with only six they had burrowed away. The rest were lost. Removed. Extinguished. Never to be seen again. As the winds of the night's fury whipped and cracked like long tendrils across the fields above them, they focused on what would come. They would be found here, eventually. They needed to plan. Needed to set out for a place they only had heard whispers of. Whispers as gentle as a strand of hair caught in gentle breezes no longer known. Whispers as deadly as an assassin's blade in the shadow.

The first breath is always the hardest. After that- it’s a slow march. Gas masks caked with age and dust- grimy and blistered- but they keep us whole. Second breath. Better. This thing will hold up, at least for today. At the very least, for these early hours. It was a red dawn slathered behind mustard yellows and deeply sliced orange between. A tiger’s stripe bathed in blood, I had once heard it called. But I had also given ear to many names- many descriptions- some of which were more base-plate than others. There’s a savage beauty in these searing skies, if you can see it. I can. I can see it. Which, I suppose, is why I’m out here in the first place, doing what none of the others could care to do. “It’s a waste of time,” I’ve been instructed. “You’re going to get yourself killed,” others have warned. “There’s nothing out there for you. For us. For anyone.” Her voice always replayed in my mind last. At first layered behind the din, but slowly emergent, gradually louder. Her. That voice. Her voice. “Come back to me,” she had said. The last words she had said. To me. To anyone. The last words. Final. Forever. Long gone and dusted like what used to stand tall- on the ground and in my mind.

He came to quite slowly. As if great weights had been placed on his eyelids, he found it difficult to open them. Groggy. Murky. Foggy. He could feel heat on his face and neck, but could not see the source. A lamp? A fire? Or perhaps it was the... No, that was not possible. There was no way. The light of the sun had long been absent from the world, forever shuttered by the thick and billowing clouds of humanity's greatest achievement: it's obsession with destroying itself. He made the effort to open his eyes again, and this time he found some success. He still could not see what was around him, however. Dark shapes whispered around lighter splotches wrapped about sinewy columns like venomous vipers shrunk in coil. Strike. Strike. Ready to strike. He suddenly felt very vulnerable. Every Saturday, the Gotham Gazette includes a small life-styles piece called "Gotham is." In the column, random Gothamites are asked to complete the sentence "Gotham is..." using three words or less. The Gazette has been running the "Gotham is..." column for years, since I was a boy. Here are some of the words used to describe Gotham the past few weeks: "Damned." "Cursed." "Bedlam." "Murderous." Gotham is "villainous." Gotham is "a lost cause." Gotham is "hopeless." Once in a while, someone names one of the city's villains as their answer to the "Gotham is" question. Usually it's some kid, a teenager going for shock value. But now and then someone actually tries to make the argument that the city is best reflected in its villains. For example, "Gotham is Two-Face", meaning Gotham is a city at odds with itself. Or "Gotham is Killer Croc", meaning the city is little more than a cannibalistic monster. I've seen a few "Mr. Freezes." Two "Black Masks." Lately I've seen a couple new names appear, too. But for me, Gotham's criminals... Whether old... Or new... Will never define this city. Because in the end, they're simple and cowardly, ruled by predictable desires. Granted, now and then, one of them will do something that catches me off-guard... Something particularly depraved... Or twisted... Of course, one of the most common answers to the "Gotham is" question is "Batman." Gotham is "Batman." Gotham is "Batman's city." Gotham is "the bat." ...All answers I'm partial to, myself. Still, I like to think a vote for Batman is a broader affirmation- a vote for all of Gotham's heroes.

mindgrains : @timkau_nyc Star Trek IV was a 10/10. Star Trek Nemesis was an 8/10. The first "new" star trek was an 8/10. This newest Star Trek... I'll have to see it again to make a more formal decision, but I'd give it a 9/10. These numbers are based off how I judge all of the Star Trek films. Most of hover around 6 or 7. A few, like Insurrection and Undiscovered Country, are much lower on the totem pole haha.

Couldn't sleep. Slammed with allergies and congestion, I decided to leave a bit early before heading into work. With the sounds of "I Believe In Your Victory" by This Will Destroy You, I found some peace by the river- not from my physical woes, but from my mental frustrations. If you suffer from severe allergic reactions to pollen and the like, you'll know what I mean when I say that. Shame that I must get back on the saddle and continue my ride into downtown. Though, I am quite looking forward to that first cup of coffee....
