BONELUST BONE PROCESSING PROGRESS: I've been processing a full cat skeleton for some months now. But I go out of my way to NOT post processing photos of possibly domestic animals. I know it upsets some people. It used to upset me. But after rescuing & later burying countless cats (& other animals) I've become a bit desynthesized to death. AGAIN, I DO NOT PROCESS MY PETS. I bury them in my pet cemetery. This cat just appeared one day out by the road in front of my house. No apparent signs of trauma or cause of death. After processing I found some anomalies to the skeletal structure. Old injuries the are apparent in the bones. Like ribs that healed bent. One thing you can see here is that it was possibly and elderly and/or ill cat. The incisors are not missing but only the roots remain in the skull. So there is a chance this cat had a natural death.
eztz13 : Thanks for the heads up.
bonelust_at_gato_ranch : It is funny, I'm SUPER patient but have never had the patience to articulate an entire skeleton and I've processed countless full animals. @thesmallbeast
deadbuttrue : You respect others and death so now i respect you even more! ;) (though i knew you did it before) :D
oconh85 : @bonelust_at_gato_ranch your fucking awesome! I've really wanted to get in to taxidermy and bone preservation, do u have like a beginners area of one of your blogs??? I got questions from chemicals to flesh eating Beatles to mounting. I think your work is boss and would love to learn what u have taught your self. P.s. baroness in charleston in the 28th
ladylockslife : I found a cat in a very similar way! A veru large old cat.
bonelust_at_gato_ranch : Thanks @deadbuttrue this stuff is very important to me.
bonelust_at_gato_ranch : @oconh85 All I can suggest is check it all out. I've only been posting the extensive HowTo posts the last couple years are really hardly posted any last year. I post a lot of stuff here that I elaborate on at my blog. As for chemical, only one I use is hydrogen peroxide and ammonia on a rare case. You want to avoid chemicals for strong bones. I don't really do any taxidermy so may not know about the mounting question. Only dermestid beetle (or other carrion insects) I currently use in my bone processing are all will. Most of my processing is natural. Baroness is going to blow you away, so envious!
bonelust_at_gato_ranch : That's really interesting @ladylockslife old animals do wander off when they are dying. So could be part of it.

BONELUST BONE PROCESSING PROGRESS: Opossum skull & mandible cleaned up nicely. Rinsed & now in hydrogen peroxide bath. Was really hoping to finally have a complete opossum skull specimen but it has some kind of nasal damage. Either it is related to the trauma that caused its death or another scavenger did it postmortem. Strange because I wasn't expecting this from an opossum that died in a suburban backyard.

joeget : @clanbd999
doctor_rasterbator666 : Why not get some dermestid beetles?
bonelust_at_gato_ranch : @doctor_rasterbator666 Only dermestid beetle (or other carrion insects) I currently use in my bone processing are all wild. Most of my processing is natural. I actually really enjoy this slow process over letting the beetles do all the work. haha. But I may eventually get a captive colony for small animals. I have a lot of problems with them. Also, care of a dermestid colony is not easy.
doctor_rasterbator666 : Yeah. I have been wanting some. But I don't process enough stuff to justify having a colony. They do such a good job though. Especially in the nose cavity
doctor_rasterbator666 : Great work btw. Keep it up
bonelust_at_gato_ranch : But you know what honestly, maceration does a better job in my opinion. They don't do any degreasing. @doctor_rasterbator666

BONELUST BONE PROCESSING Q&A: I want to start collecting bones/animal remains but I'm concerned about disease. What sort of safety precautions do you take while removing flesh from bone? Good questions that I think not enough beginning bone collectors think about. Well obviously be super sanitary about each step of it. Here are some steps I take to stay sanitary: Wear a respirator or at least a surgical/dust mask when you have concerns about airborne disease. I always wear high quality well fitted latex gloves when handling any remains until they are completely sanitary AFTER the hydrogen peroxide bath, which is the final step of processing. You can get every size imaginable in boxes of 100 on Amazon.com. You don't want cheap gloves tearing open while you're handling rotting carcasses. If you only have cheap gloves, double up. Take care not to do processing where you eat or bathe. Every time I see a photo of a skull in a bathroom sink with their toothbrush and glass nearby I cringe. Keep your processing tools separate from your kitchen tools AND wash separate. Yes, these things would seem like common sense but I've seen bone collectors do things you wouldn't believe. Also, do not let your pets drink maceration water, peroxide bath or chew on dead things. I've seen far too many photos where people think this is funny. It can be VERY bad for your pets to do any of these things. Would you let your child drink/chew on these things??? Also, wash your hands/arms, hair and clothes/shoes after possible contamination. After I've gotten myself into some REALLY nasty stuff I put my clothes (shoes included, I wear Chucks so I can) into the wash and take a shower myself. When you're working on maceration tubs or handling dead animals you can expect a certain amount of contamination of your clothes/shoes. Splashback from maceration baths is very common. If you have long hair like me, take care to pull it back and keep it out of the nastiness. Likewise, wash down your processing work area and maceration tubs after use. Read the rest at my blog - bone-lust.blogspot.com
bonelust_at_gato_ranch : Aww thanks @oconh85 any chance Nick Hood is related to you?
jozeywales : This is truly awesome..thanks for the info!
bonelust_at_gato_ranch : Happy to help! @jozeywales
dingus_inc : Hi Jana! I was hoping you'd be able to help me with something here... I processed some deer vertebrae recently and I kept finding these little larvae like things burrowed into the bone... Like maggots almost but smaller and skinnier, even after macerating, degreasing, AND peroxide soaking I still keep finding them! ;( have you dealt with this before?
bonelust_at_gato_ranch : Haha yes! @dingus_inc but have no idea what they are. I think they are already in the bones before maceration. But drown during that as they try to emerge from the bones to escape the water. And some get all the way through to the peroxide bath sticking out of the bone still. Usually mostly in vertebrae. I just use a toothbrush and brush them off. Strange phenomena for sure!
dingus_inc : It's so weird! I found dead ones all thru the cleaning process and thought they were all gone till I put my clean bones in a ziplock and found live ones in there the next day! :X
bonelust_at_gato_ranch : Whoa what?! I'm thinking your peroxide bath it too diluted if that happening or you aren't using it long enough. @dingus_inc Nothing should live through that. That's nuts!
dingus_inc : I'm thinking I'll be using pure peroxide with no water then, because I even did a peroxide bath twice for good measure :o

BONELUST BONE PROCESSING PROGRESS: For some reason I never cleaned these 3 buck skulls/partial skull. One is super greasy, one is still fleshy w/fur & the other probably just has soil on it. So I put all of them to soak in water AKA maceration. Keeping the antlers of each above water level as well as I could to minimize them warping, soaking up grease or stink. Then I covered them tightly with bags since these will be left outside. You do not want insect larvae in your maceration tubs like mosquitoes or maggots. They can possibly start to eat away at the bone or kill the bacteria you do want there.

BONELUST BONE PROCESSING Q&A: Do you have any websites you can suggest to learn how to clean bones & process roadkill for their bones? Yes, my blog! Bone-Lust.Blogspot.Com - I had to learn everything you see here myself, I have already made the mistakes & am still learning new things all the time after over 30 years of bone collecting. So, 5 years ago I started my own blog BONELUST to share my lifetime of knowledge with others. It is an invaluable source of information, so take advantage of it. I know so many here alone have learned from it & hearing about their progress makes me happy. I learned pre-internet & books on these topics at a time when it was incredibly looked down on upon. So I'm still amazed how common & open (not to mention trendy) bone collecting is now. But true bone collecting in my opinion is not buying your collection, but finding dead animals yourself and processing them for their bones. Or at least finding their nature cleaned remains already mostly cleaned. I myself try to only purchase bones/skulls that are not native to me... and I still feel like I'm cheating, haha. I get so much more satisfaction knowing I did all the work myself & I know it is ethical too. You rarely know the true history of the bones you buy. I realized I was answering so many questions about bone processing here that I should make more posts at my blog too. So I have been. Especially the process photos with timelines. I think those are especially invaluable to a bone collector. Enjoy!
bonelust_at_gato_ranch : I have had many requests for a book @anaurora but I'll just have to keep thinking about it. In the cyber age books sales do very poorly honestly. But maybe one day. As it is I can barely keep up with my blog. Maybe when I'm absolutely sure I have steady income coming in from my bone art/jewelry I can find the time (and money, because Id self publish) to do it! I'd like to.
android_lime : Yeah im in SA its great for skulls and dead stuff. Have you tried lacquer thinners before and had any issues. So far its seemed to work best for me but want to find out if there are any long term problems. I damaged one of my giraffe skulls with ammonia and water. Could be because I made it to strong or could be because the person I got it from boiled it..
bonelust_at_gato_ranch : What a bummer about the giraffe skull @android_lime I want one so badly. As you can imagine they are insanely expensive for me to get here in the states. I really wouldn't use lacquer thinner or paint thinner. I'd specifically only use acetone if you're going to use a chemical instead of soap & water. And yes, when you use ammonia you have to use VERY little. You've just got to have patience. Degreasing can literally take months. Especially for big skulls and thick bones.
skinandbonecreations : Question, I looked through your blog briefly, but didn't come across what I need, just wondering of you have ever worked with turtles. Here in south Carolina we have tons of baby red eared slidders get hit by cats after they hatch and I've collected a good many in my bone shed, out when I lived in the country I found them completely dried out by the sun, but now I just want the shells since the rest is destroyed. What should I do, they are still meaty. Should I put them in water and do all that or do you have any suggestions? Ant pile maybe in a secured cage?
bonelust_at_gato_ranch : I just started getting lots of turtle questions because they are sadly getting killed by cars right now @skinandbonecreations and I was JUST looking at my turtle shells earlier thinking I need to do some more research hands on and do a post about them. Turtles/tortoise are an exception to my processing techniques for you. You're only going to find bones to process in them in their legs, tail, neck & head. Inside their shell the vertebrae is attached. If you drop a whole turtle into macerate it will completely fall apart. As I found out the hard way. Even leaving a turtle outside in the elements it will fall apart. The scutes fall off the shell them the shell breaks into many pieces. So, I've got a pile of meaty shells I've processed the skulls from but I'm still trying to figure out what to do with the shell. So stay tuned on that.
skinandbonecreations : Thanks, I feel like trying a bunch of things since I have so many and if I find a good safe process ill let you in on it!
android_lime : I have 5. Ive never shipped oversea before but looking into it. Ill give you a shout if I decide to part with any of them.
bonelust_at_gato_ranch : Thanks @android_lime all that customs stuff is so complicated.

julieinpdx : Interesting!! I just found a deer skeleton in the woods. It must of been a young adult because it looks more like the top skull.
garrytylerberger : All of the male (buck) white tail skulls I have found have all had their horns (or antlers, whichever you prefer) cut off of them, leaving them with a large portion missing from the top of the skull... I only have 1 buck I've found with the horns still on.
bonelust_at_gato_ranch : Yes, that's what trophy hunters do. @garrytylerberger and I've found it varies by location what hunters do. Here where I live in FL., they never leave a buck skull. Antlers sawed off or otherwise. They take the whole head. Some places take only the antlers. Some places do a "V" cut into the head to take the antlers together, leaving the rest of the head. Some saw off the top/back of the cranium for the antlers. I find this variation based on location interesting.
garrytylerberger : @bonelust_at_gato_ranch around here, West Virginia, we usually just cut the back of the cranium... I haven't harvested a nice buck since I've really starting with all my bones and skulls, I'm really wanting another whole skull with the antlers.

They are natural death, road kill and hunter dumped remains I've collected & fully processed myself. Nothing is ever killed for my art. On rare occasions I locate ethical sources for anything I can't find locally. Like the quills & deer antler I use, which are naturally shed. A favorite vantage point of animal skulls. Down the nasal cavity. This time of a white-tailed deer.

hld4ransom : I was literally looking down a similar skull today, equally smitten by the curling internal nasal cavity. Nature is a boss.
bonelust_at_gato_ranch : AWESOME! That part very often is destroyed or falls out during processing because it is so thin and barley held into place. Which only make me appreciate it more. @hld4ransom
feuerzeug : In human skulls, there should be a small bone in there that's pretty much always missing.

This is why I'm calling this white-tailed deer skull a sub adult instead of adult. The adult teeth are still coming in. It is also smaller, the bone is thinner, making it lighter in weight & more fragile than adult skulls I have.
bonelustpersonalcollection - notforsale -
pariahdog : I found a deer just like that last week. It's always cool to see teeth growing in (or in the process of falling out, I have a few like that too).
nadzomg : @insertnamelisa you'll probably dig this chick- xxo
wolflesh : Oh my! Hello pretty! I hope that my first deer comes out half this white and clean!
bonelust_at_gato_ranch : Funny thing is that this one whitened a little lighter than I normally like them. Loses some detail in the bone texture. I think it had to do with the bone being younger/thinner @wolflesh
tommerchant : Hello. Ive been sent your way to ask whats the best way to clean a skull so it comes up all nice and white?

BONELUST BONE PROCESSING PROGRESS: Subadult White- tailed Deer Skull processing progression photos & timeline. 1) As it was found in late January. 2) As is arrived shipped to me in early March. Put into maceration tub soon after. 3) Taken out of maceration tub, rinsed & put into hydrogen peroxide bath mid April. 4) Finished in late April.

bonelust_at_gato_ranch : @madtatt Where did you hear that??? It is REALLY hard to destroy bone with hydrogen peroxide. Unless you're using it at full industrial strength. Which most people can not even get a hold of. I use the reg store bought stuff that is already diluted down to 3% and I make a bath with half water, half peroxide. This skull was in that for a couple weeks and it is fine. I've done this countless times.
bonelust_at_gato_ranch : If you post photos I can give you a better review of what to do, or send them to me at Etsy @madtatt If bones have been outside naturally cleaning for a long time the bone structure has already began to break down and there isn't much you need to do or can do.
madtatt : @bonelust_at_gato_ranch that was super helpful! Thank you! Ill send them to you on etsy :)
crow_durany_art : Where do you get your skulls?
bonelust_at_gato_ranch : As this photo series shows, I mostly process dead animals that I find. @crow_durany_art
crow_durany_art : Wow. Where do you find so many? And how much is processing
bonelust_at_gato_ranch : Huh? Processing is free, I do it myself. These are dead animals I find. @crow_durany_art Not sure you understand what I'm saying. Check out my blog. There is a link on my profile.
crow_durany_art : Ok will do, thanks man

BONELUST BONE PROCESSING PROGRESS: One of the main things I see most bone collectors struggling with is having the patience to get the job done right. Right meaning using steps that leave the bone strongest as a finished piece. Processing from start to finish for me can take weeks or even months per skeleton/skull. Start being a dead animal, finished being only the bone/horn/hoof/claw/antlers. The way I get around being impatient is to always have several projects going on at all times in every step of my bone processing. 1) Natural decomposition and/or maceration 2) Degreasing 3) Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) bath. Right now I have these skulls/bones in their final H2O2 bath. Deer skulls, goat skull & wild boar vertebrae. One deer skull is on the side to further lighten a stain. The goat skull was too big for the container so once the skull lightened it was time to do the same to the horns (minus the horn sheaths). Much more info at my blog. Link on my profile here.
tattooedladyk : @bonelust_at_gato_ranch so talented n helpful amazing thank u 😘
bonelust_at_gato_ranch : Happy to help sweetheart @tattooedladyk
coultermoore : Dermestids are awesome but they are very delicate. They need exact hydration and perfect heat and humidity!!! They do amazing work though, very fast.
bonelust_at_gato_ranch : Exactly @coultermoore I get countless messages from people about them and I always try to talk them out of starting a colony. Because everyone I've talked to have no concept that they are just like any other caged pet you have to properly care for. I've researched into it a lot and still don't full understand their care myself.
coultermoore : They are very delicate creatures. They take more love and care than any pet. Just keeping them fed is a chore. I know a lot about them from my taxidermy days
magenlisa : Is this indoors? And is it okay to not put a lid on while doing a H2O2 bath?
bonelust_at_gato_ranch : Sunlight would ruin the peroxide power, so yes this is indoor and out of direct sunlight @magenlisa I usually DON'T put tight lids on peroxide baths because oxygen activates is and pressure can build up and lids can blow off. Haha

BONELUST PERSONAL COLLECTION: Just picked up this gorgeous adult male Pronghorn Antelope skull. I will be putting a lot of time into this piece to remove the paint someone coated it with then properly degreasing & whitening it. Every time I see someone use white paint instead of properly processing bones to begin with it makes me cringe. I know it looks great in this little tiny photo but in person is it in a sad state. Looks to be quite old as well or it was outside.

diarrhea_wolf : Bleh. I don't care what color someone tries to paint bones, it's all tasteless to me. Bones are not meant to be canvases, they're too intricate and pretty as is. :<
requiemtattoo : What's the process like for removing paint? I've got an old roe deer that someone along the way decided to take a brush to
bonelust_at_gato_ranch : @amriver91 horn sheaths coming off is normal. Most goats, sheep, cattle, buffalo etc come off. When they decompose the past that held it to the head is no longer there. One of these comes right off. I actually need to try to get the other one off to property clean the bone. The antelope thing is like people here in the states call vultures buzzards and opossum possum. It is just not technically or scientifically accurate. I get that it is common but my upbringing (father is scientist, mother is naturalist), schooling (zoology) & past work (with biologists) conflicts with it, haha @cadillac_tramp
bonelust_at_gato_ranch : Yeah not a huge fan of painted bone myself @wolflesh @diarrhea_wolf but even I have future plans to use tastefully painted skulls in future artwork. I myself am VERY picky about decorated skulls.
bonelust_at_gato_ranch : I don't honestly know yet @requiemtattoo
katherinepaige : I don't mind painted skulls that are painted as an art piece, but I really hate when they're painted plain white to make it look clean and new or something. Huge pet peeve. -_-
bonelust_at_gato_ranch : Yeah pet peeve of mine for sure as well @katherinepaige

NEW BONE LUST NATURAL RELICS PIECES IN THE WORKS: Making some new original editions to my Natural Relics Pendant Lockets series right now & also making those pre-orders I already got! Thanks for your patience everyone. My creation of these is in part up to Mother Nature to give me fresh lichen. I already have some preorders up for some options at my Bonelust Etsy shop! Stay tuned for other new pieces tonight.
bonelust_at_gato_ranch : @justinemariiie I don't do actual taxidermy if that's what you're wanting, sorry. I highly suggest you contacting my friend Luren at @preciouscreature who does exactly what I think you want. In the meantime I hope you have her in the freezer.
sinnersandsaviours : Very beautiful!

justinemariiie : @bonelust_at_gato_ranch no no, I will do that part. I'm just asking you to put her skull in a necklace for me.... I'm really very smart with this stuff. I've been a collector my whole life... I know what to do... I just want her in a necklace
bonelust_at_gato_ranch : OK I wasn't sure what you were asking. So you'd process her for the bones and send me the skull? @justinemariiie Yes, I can absolutely make you something like this. The sooner you send it the more option of pendant styles I'll have. I plan on making more rat/mice skull pieces very soon. Should give you ideas. Just message me direct at bonelust.etsy.com to discuss the details. Thanks!
