2 days of Mother's Day posts, #1: This is Nikki and her daughter, Ellen. Nikki is a former gestation crate sow. In 2008 after suffering the horror of gestation crate breeding, she was pregnant and found paddling the massive Iowa floods among scores of filth and dead pigs. Nikki, undoubtedly scared and emaciated from having gone without food for days, paddled her way to safety and gave birth to four babies on a levee. When she was found by rescuers, she would give out warning calls and would not let them approach her in an effort to protect her babies--the only ones, that only because of this tragedy, she was ever allowed to keep, and something that she still does to this day if she thinks there's a threat to her children--like during routine health checks. She and her babies have been kept together, even as adults. They will live together forever at the sanctuary. Ellen is the most attached to her mother. She is always near her, always sleeps right next to her. Recently when we had to separate Nikki and isolate her to the neighboring pen to recover from a foot infection, Ellen would always greet her mom through the gate and sleep directly on the other side of the fence as her mom, as close as possible, even if she couldn't see her. Nikki is a caring, excellent mother--and if one of her kids steps out of line, she puts them right back in their place! It's so funny. I love her so deeply. She reminds me of my mom. I'm so honored by her and have rarely met a mother human or not, more dedicated than she. The food industry prays on female bodies, families, and motherhood; it exploits them and slaughters these bonds as often as it slaughters individual bodies. What you buy matters so much. It matters to families like Nikki's. Animal products cause unnecessary suffering. If we set up a 3D printer in each town or village then you could print out food for all. It would only be a case of setting up a 3D printer and a few solar panels

mdavies092 : @jdbpa14 he is doing pretty good. They haven't officially met yet. I gave him a blanket that she was wrapped In so he could get used to her smell. And I want him to get used to her smell in the room before they officially meet. He let's me hold her in the bed with him which is a big step because he thinks he owns the bed lol so he's doing really good.
