This is the story of Gudrun the Orca.
If you can get your hands on a copy of “Death at Seaworld,” there’s a really detailed section of the book dedicated to telling her story. I highly recommend the book.
In short, she was a wild caught Icelandic orca that lived for a while at Dolfinarium Harderwijk for a few years, until she was transferred to Seaworld Orlando in 1987.
She gave birth Taima (half Icelandic, half transient, very unnatural mix) here, and also another calf named Nyar who had some birth defects both mentally and physically. When Nyar was born, Gudrun tried to drown her, as if she was trying to put her out of her misery.
Gudrun was soon impregnated again. Since she was one of the few orcas at SWO with good teeth and a straight dorsal, she would be frequently used for pictures with guests. This means she spent long amounts of time on the slide-outs posing for pictures, while putting immense pressure on her organs and her unborn baby.
In February of 1996 she went into labor for 7 hours, and have birth to a stillborn baby, and then proceeded to bleed to death for several painful hours. Her daughter Nyar died soon after also, just a month later. Gudrun was only 20 and Nyar was only 2.
