There is an old Chinese legend of the Dragon Gate in which koi fish swim upstream in the Yellow River, through waterfalls and other obstacles to reach the top of the mountain. At the top of the mountain was a point called "Dragon Gate". The legend says that when any koi succeeded in climbing the falls and reaching Dragon Gate, it would be transformed into a dragon, one of the most auspicious creatures in Chinese culture. Based on that legend the Koi became a symbol of worldly aspiration and advancement. The painting was inspired by this legend and consists of layers of texture through tissue, gesso, oil paint and gold leaf. Jeanette Jobson is a visual artist who lives and works in Flatrock, Newfoundland and Labrador. For thirty years, she has explored the world through a variety of mediums, with her work evolving over time into its current mix of representational and impressionist techniques with a concentration on reflections, water and fish. Her work can be found in the collection of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador as well as collections in Canada, USA, England and New Zealand.
