bugeyed : @psychemac @loddelina Thank you! This view looks down the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, which was designed to emulate the Champs-รlysรฉes. Our two wonderful art museums, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Barnes Foundation, are located on this long, wide street, along with many other museums and attractions. Philadelphia City Hall can be seen at the far end of the Parkway.

Across from the Philadelphia Museum of Art is Eakins Oval. The centerpiece of the park is the Washington Monument, a huge sculpture designed by German sculptor Rudolf Siemering in 1897. The bronze and granite replica of George Washington on a horse sits atop a granite pedestal. Four pairs of Native American figures and animals surround him, guarding pools of water representing the four great waterways of America: the Mississippi, the Potomac, the Delaware, and the Hudson. The 13 steps that lead to the pedestal represent the original 13 states. Each side of the monument represents aspects of the American journey: victory in the war, warning against the dangers of slavery, westward movement, and the march of the Army. (about.com)

This text book description doesn't begin to do justice to this ridiculously awesome monument. The detail is breathtaking - a photographer's dream! We could easily have a meetup of JUST the Art Museum and Eakins Oval! These shots give you an idea of why the Washington Monument is a hometown fave.
