Chapter 1
Lexi punched the punching bag one last time before taking a sip from her water. It was only two hours until the reaping ceremony began, and she needed to start getting ready.
She showered quickly, put her hair up in two braids and slipped into the dress she had picked out a few days earlier for the ceremony. She looked at herself in the mirror and scowled; as much as she liked the girl she saw, and how beautiful she was, it just wasn't her.
Being from district 2, she had to have a strong physical appearance but act elegant at the same time, and she hated it. Most women in the district were trained with throwing knives, and it eventually became their most useful weapon, but she was best at hand-to-hand combat.
Even her dress, a beautiful gold gown, had a slit for a knife in it. She carefully dropped a small knife into the invisible pocket, making sure it was unnoticeable. The knife was a gift from her mother, and though Lexi and her mom weren't on speaking terms, she still treasure the knife.
She looked down at her watch, a strap of white leather attached to a small clock, noticing she had another hour before the ceremony.
She contemplated going back to the punching bag, but crossed off the option since it would make her sweat and she couldn't allow herself to ruin her appearance one bit.
Instead, she left the house and walked over to the neighboring house that belonged to a couple with twin boys. She didn't bother knocking on the door, knowing they would be home an hour before the reaping. Stepping into the house, she walked into the small living room that held a worn out couch and a few chairs that were organize around a small coffee table and smiled at Jeremy, one of the twins.
"You look beautiful, Lex!", He complemented her. He was wearing a black buttoned up shirt with a white tie above it and black jeans, and he looked way better than she did; or at least that's what she thought.
"Thank you, you look great as well.", she thanked him. She had never seen him looking so formal, since this was his first year at the reaping.
"You're not going to volunteer, are you?", he asked, his tone worried.
