PART 17: I hesitated trying to think of a way to keep him from seeing what I was really thinking. "Um, I was thinking about tomorrow night," I began honestly. "You were?" he replied, a bemused expression on his face. I twirled the end of my long dark braid around my finger, very aware of the intense gaze his blue eyes held on my face. "Yeah, just, you know, I'm excited," I finished, avoiding his eyes. He smiled, the corners of his eyes crinkling slightly as he did. "I'm looking forward to it, too," he said. We picked up our trays and headed back to the classrooms. A few hours later, Mariah and I were walking home. I knew she was waiting for me to explain the reason behind my silence. "Mariah, what if I don't know how to trust people anymore?" I blurted, tears sudden threatening to spill over. I wiped them away, frustrated at my own weakness. Mariah touched my arm gently. "I'm sure everything will be okay, Alex. He cares about you- I know he wouldn't try to hurt you. And I think you'll gradually be able to believe in that, and in him. It just takes time," she said softly. Sometimes, despite being such a cheeseball, my best friend really knew just what to say. I smiled back at her, wiping away the last of my tears. "Thanks, Mar," I said. "What else are friends for?" she grinned. We decided to have a girls night and watch our favorite movies. Mariah wouldn't let me make cookie dough, though. She said something about bloating and looking good in my dress. I just laughed and agreed to eating the vegetables she had prepared. I couldnt help but feel excited now- Wednesday night was going to be amazing.

PART 16: It was Tuesday. The weekend had been pretty normal- Mariah and I had gone shopping at the mall on her insistence. She claimed I needed to "look like a sexy piece of ass," which I thought was a bit much. I did want to look good for my date with Louis, though, so I bought a cute dress and sandals to wear. I may not always seem like one or act like one, but I can be a bit of a girly-girl. Anyway, Monday came and went, and as my alarm rang Tuesday morning, I couldn't help but feel excited. My friendship with Louis was growing, and though he hasn't officially asked me to be his girlfriend yet, I didn't think the question was too far away. I was nervous, though- what if I wasn't able to trust him the way I should? What if something happened and he didn't have feelings for me anymore? I worried the entire way to school, even with Mariah chatting endlessly beside me. "I'm thinking you should curl your hair and let me do smokey eyeshadow for your date," she was saying. I just nodded along, feeling as though a knot was growing in the pit of my stomach. Seeing Louis only slightly helped. We all sat together at lunch, Mariah and Louis talking about something I once gain wasn't paying attention to. "So Alex, what are you thinking about?" Louis said suddenly, interrupting my thoughts. "Don't try to hide it from me- it was obvious you were spacing out," he laughed, taking a bite of his pasta salad.
