Stronger than the storm - Long Beach Island, NJ perseveres
October was a tough one spent sharing, then tearing up over post Hurricane Sandy photos of our beloved Long Beach Island. My family and I in disbelief over images of my former workplace under enough water to partially submerge a stop sign or soggy bagels strewn about the Bagel Shack where I crawled beneath the counter as a child. It was my third day on the job in the newsroom back in Philly, tasked with editing aerial photos of my father's street where the ocean had met the bay. Holgate, NJ. Place where my scattered family has convened every summer of my life. Where I took my first steps and sips of booze, where I ran somewhat amuck as the eyes of our extended LBI family always watching, sometimes looking the other way. I was there weeks later to assess the damage. Dad, Dad's girlfriend, me. The tears on our faces still palpable as we sifted through debris. As I've gotten older and watched my parents divorce and my four siblings go off to college, move to other countries and states, marry, have children - LBI is our constant in a sea of change undulating with time. We didn't see Sandy coming. Nor will she quickly go in our minds. But now as a family of blood and otherwise, the island is piecing itself back together for a defining season that only stands to embody our resilient spirit. Stronger than the storm, the ocean will once again be a place of buoyant reverie. Not unlike learning to swim and dive under impending waves, our heads will once again come above water, perhaps with more reverence toward the ocean's majestic power. Our hearts are with those still struggling in Sandy's aftermath, those who lost homes and loved ones. In the wake of the storm let us remember the kindness of strangers and HOPE this too will be in the forefront of our minds and hearts after the rain.
